UCLA's Katie Rulon Earns MPSF Co-Player of the Week Honors

March 10, 2009

WOODLAND, Calif. - Senior Katie Rulon of the UCLA women's water polo team has captured MPSF Co-Player of the Week honors, as announced Monday by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Rulon led the Bruins (15-3, 4-0 MPSF) with nine goals in three games over a two-day span last weekend.

Rulon, who has scored in 17 of UCLA's 18 matches, totaled three goals in an 11-5 MPSF victory over No. 7 California on Saturday. After scoring one goal in a 22-3 rout of Cal Lutheran in the morning, Rulon followed with a season-high five-goal effort to lead the Bruins past Cal State Northridge, 9-3.

The senior attacker from Point Loma, Calif., has totaled nine multiple-goal games this season, including one five-goal performance (March 8) and one four-goal effort (Feb. 7, vs. Hawai'i). Rulon enters this Thursday's match against No. 9 UC Irvine with 36 goals, the second-highest total on the team.

Rulon currently ranks ninth among all MPSF scorers in goals per game, averaging 2.00 goals per contest (36 goals, 18 matches). One year ago, Rulon led the Bruins with 62 goals.

Rulon becomes the third Bruin to earn the conference's weekly honors this season. Seniors Tanya Gandy (Jan. 26) and Brittany Fullen (Feb. 16) have also been named MPSF Player of the Week.

No. 3 UCLA returns to action against No. 9 UC Irvine (11-4) in a non-conference match at the Bruins' Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Game time is 3 p.m.
