Nilsson Vying For Pac-12 Decathlon Crown

Marcus Nilsson is in contention for his first ever conference crown in the decathlon as the Swedish sophomore stands in second-place after day one at the Pac-12 Championship in Eugene, OR.

Nilsson came into the meet ranked third in the conference and is now vying for the title as he is just 82 points out of first. He started the day with the ninth-fastest time in the 100m, 11.43, picking up 767 points. In the long jump, he placed third with a mark of 22-7 (785 pts.) and then had a big day in the shot put as he threw a lifetime-best of 47-4.50 to win the event (659 pts.). He then posted another lifetime-best in the high jump with his clearance of 6-5.50, placing fifth overall and picking up 776 points. Nilsson ended day one with the fourth-fastest 400m time, 50.23, for 823 points as he totaled 3887 points after the first five events.

Senior David Thomas stands in scoring position as he is eighth after day one with 3573 points. Thomas opened up the meet with the 17th-fastest 100m time (11.59, 734 pts.) and then posted a lifetime-best in the long jump with the second-best mark of the day, 22-9 (797 pts.). In the shot put, he was third overall (41-00.25, 637 pts.) and then tied for 10th in the high jump (6-00.75, 670 pts.). Thomas wrapped up the day with the 11th-fastest 400m time, 51.77, for 735 pts.

Junior Dominic Giovannoni stands just outside of scoring in ninth-place with a total of 3537 points. He was eighth in both the 100m (11.40, 774 pts.) and long jump (21-10.25, 734 pts.), and then placed fourth in the shot put with a season-best toss of 40-9.75 (633 pts.). He tied for 14th in the high jump (5-11.50, 644 pts.) and then finished 10th in the 400m (51.38, 752 pts.).

The Bruins' fourth decathlete, senior Trent Perez, stands in 12th-place with 3455 points. Perez was 11th in the 100m (11.45, 763 pts.), 10th in the long jump with a season-best (20-11.25, 670 pts.), 17th in the shot put (32-9.50, 485 pts.), equaled his season-best in the high jump to tie for eighth (6-2, 696 pts.) and then ended the day with the second-fastest 200m time, which was a season-best (49.43, 841 pts.).

Competition concludes on Sunday with the final five events of the decathlon - the 110m hurdles, pole vault, discus, javelin and 1500m.
