LOS ANGELES - The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team dropped a 7-3 decision to No. 2 California, in an MPSF match on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center. Junior Caitlin Dement led the Bruins (18-4, 1-2 MPSF) with seven saves in the loss.
California (16-3, 4-0 MPSF) was led by Emily Csikos and Breda Vosters, who each scored two goals. The Golden Bears also received goals from Kelly Mendoza, Katie Monton and Ashley Young.
UCLA took an early 1-0 lead on a penalty goal from KK Clark. Young scored the equalizer for California at the two-minute mark in the opening quarter. The two sides entered the second quarter tied, 1-1. In the opening seconds of the in the opening seconds of the period, Clark had a chance to give the Bruins the lead with a penalty shot. California goalkeeper Stephanie Peckham stopped the shot, recording one of her 12 saves on the afternoon.
The Bruins were blanked in the second and third periods, entering the final quarter trailing 4-1. Senior Noel Umphrey cut the lead to 4-2, but the deficit was too much, as California added three more goals to win 7-3.
UCLA returns to action at No. 1 Stanford in an MPSF contest on Saturday, March 26. Game time at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center is 4 p.m.
