LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 7 Arizona State, 14-4, at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Sunday. UCLA concluded its regular-season slate with a perfect 27-0 record and 12-0 MPSF mark.
Arizona State (19-10, 6-5 MPSF) jumped out to an early lead with an extra-man goal by Candice Phillippe, but senior Brittany Rowe scored the equalizer just thirteen seconds later. In her final regular-season game, senior Jillian Kraus then scored three unanswered goals in the first quarter to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead.
In the second quarter, the Bruins blanked the Sun Devils by a 4-0 margin. Seniors Courtney Mathewson, Brittany Rowe and Gabrielle Domanic each scored once for the Bruins. Junior Anne Belden added another goal to give the Bruins a 9-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, UCLA received a quick goal from Courtney Mathewson. Brittany Rowe added two more in the quarter, giving her four on the day in her final regular-season match as a Bruin. Freshman Priscilla Orozco scored two more goals, extending UCLA's lead to 14-1 after three quarters.
UCLA held its lead in the final quarter, despite three fourth-quarter goals from Arizona State sophomore Kelly Phelps.
The Bruins return to action in an exhibition game against the U.S. National Team on Thursday, April 17. Game time at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center is slated for 4 p.m.
