Men's Tennis Starts 2007 Ranked No. 4 in the Nation

Billy Martin's UCLA men's tennis team will start the 2007 season as the No. 4 ranked team in the nation as the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings were announced on Tuesday. Senior reigning NCAA Champion Benjamin Kohlloeffel leads the Bruins with a No. 5 national ranking.

Georgia will start the season off in the No. 1 spot, having earned 33 first-place votes. UCLA received one first-place vote, the only other team in the poll receiving No. 1 votes aside from Georgia. Ohio State enters the season at No. 2, followed by Baylor at No. 3, UCLA at No. 4 and Illinios at No. 5. The defending NCAA team champions, Pepperdine, enter the season in the No. 10 spot.

In singles rankings, Kohllhoeffel earned a No. 5 ranking after having won the individual title last season, while senior Chris Surapol ranks 27th.

In doubles action, two Bruin teams made the national list as Mathieu Dehaine and Jeremy Drean lead the team as the 18th-ranked partnership. Surapol and Kohlloeffel are ranked 44th.

Ohio State freshman Steven Moneke enters the season as the top-ranked singles player, while Georgia's John Isner and Luis Flores are the top-ranked doubles team.

The men's team will open up the 2007 season this weekend as they compete at two seperate tournaments - the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Indian Wells, CA and the Sherwood Tournament in Thousand Oaks, CA. They will then open up at home on Thursday, January 18 with a match against UC Irvine in the L.A. Tennis Center at 1:30 pm.
