Kylie Price became the first Bruin woman to qualify for the 2012 NCAA Championship after finishing 10th in the long jump at the NCAA West Prelim in Austin, TX in dramatic fashion.
Price came into the meet ranked 11th in the West Region and used a career day to catapult her into the NCAA Championship as a freshman. She started off the competition with a mark of 18-8 and then improved to 20-00.50 to earn three more jumps. In the final she stood in 16th-place after back-to-back fouls and had one last attempt to qualify for NCAAs. Price showed no freshman nerves when the pressure was on as she leapt out to a new lifetime-best mark of 21-00.50 (wind-legal) to finish 10th and punch her ticket to NCAAs. That mark moves her to No. 9 in school history (she was previously 10th).
Junior Turquoise Thompson easily won her heat (6) of the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.87 to automatically advance to Friday's quarterfinal rounds. Her time was the third-fastest overall and she will race for a spot in the NCAA Championship semifinal at 7:45 pm (CT) on Friday.
Sophmore Paisley Pettway also advanced to the next round at Prelims as she finished fourth in heat two with a season-best run of 2:08.38. The top three finishers in each heat plus the next nine fastest times advanced to the quarterfinals. She had the fourth-fastest time qualifier of the nine extra spots. Pettway will race in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 7:15 pm (CT).
Junior Katja Goldring narrowly missed a spot at NCAAs as she finished two places shy of the top 12 in the 10000m. Goldring was 14th overall in a time of 34:48.26. She came into the meet ranked 31st in the event and improved greatly on that rank.
In the first round of the 400m, freshman Ally Courtnall finished seventh in heat four and 38th overall with a time of 55.36.
Competition continues on Friday with Brea Buchanan in the 100m hurdles, Thompson in the 400m hurdles, Pettway in the 800m, Tasha Kolbo, Courtney Reginato and Allison Koressel in the pole vault and Alexis Walker in the high jump.
