Freshmen Lead Offensive Attack in Win Over UC Davis

SAN DIEGO - Freshman Ally Carda went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and her first collegiate home run, while freshman Stephany LaRosa added a three-hit game, as the eighth-ranked Bruins knocked off UC Davis 7-1 on Friday at the SDSU Softball Stadium.

The Bruins improve to 6-0 with the win, while the Aggies fall to 2-5. UCLA is back in action at 3 p.m. against Boise State at the USD Softball Complex.

Seniors Andrea Harrison and Katie Schroeder both had two-hit games, with Harrison also homering. Sophomore Jessica Hall picked up her second win of the season, striking out seven and giving up a run, seven hits and two walks.

The Bruins squandered an opportunity in the top of the first, as Schroeder doubled to left-center and sophomore Kellie Fox and Harrison drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. But junior B.B. Bates and senior Dani Yudin struck out and senior Samantha Camuso popped up to short to end the inning. It marked the first time this year UCLA had not scored in its first at-bat.

The Aggies left a pair on base in the bottom of the second. With runners at first and second with one out, Hall induced Heather Zimmerman and JJ Wagoner into successive groundouts to end the threat.

UCLA got on the board in the top of the third, as Harrison with one out hit her fourth homer of the season to left on the first pitch she saw to put the Bruins up 1-0. Bates followed with a walk and a single to right by Yudin put two on base. Camuso would reach on a fielder's choice to short, as Bates was retired at third for the second out of the inning. LaRosa then singled up the middle, but Yudin was held at third. Camuso rounded second and was caught in between bases, but eluded the tag of shortstop Kelly Harman, as Camuso advanced to third and Yudin scored to make it 2-0.

UC Davis left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the third, as with one out Hall struck out Chandler Wagner and induced Amy Nunez into a grounder to first to end the threat.

In the top of the fourth, Carda led off the inning by hitting the first pitch over the left-center field wall for her first collegiate homer to make it 3-0.

The Aggies got that run back in the bottom of the frame, as Harman led off with a single to left, moved up a pair of bases on consecutive sacrifices and scored on a double to center by Cassandra Ginnis to make it 3-1.

UCLA sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh and scored four times. Sophomore Talee Snow singled to right and moved to third on a single to left-center by LaRosa, who advanced to second on the throw to the infield. One out later, Carda doubled over Ginnis' head in right field to bring home both runs and make it 5-1. After Schroeder reached on an infield single to short, she took off for second and Carda came home on a perfect double steal for the Bruins' sixth run. One out later, the Bruins loaded the bases on a single to right by Harrison and a walk to Bates, with Yudin following with another free pass to force home Schroeder to make it 7-1.
