SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team earned a 12-9 victory at No. 14 Santa Clara in a non-conference match at Sullivan Aquatic Center on Sunday afternoon.

David Culpan, Cristiano Mirarchi, Paul Reynolds and Jed Springer each tallied two goals for the visiting Bruins (13-3).

Santa Clara (11-11) was led by Theo Nasser's three-goal performance.

UCLA also received one goal from Chris Fahlsing, Paul Pickell, Chris Wendt and Griffin White. The Bruins' three-goal victory came one day after earning a crucial 7-6 MPSF victory at No. 1 Stanford.

"Overall, this was a great weekend for our team," third-year head coach Adam Wright said. "To come up north to the Bay Area and get these two wins over the weekend was huge for us. Today against Santa Clara, we had a lot of guys who don't play as often get some really good experience and score some goals."

The Bruins raced to an early 3-0 lead in the opening quarter. White found the back of the cage with 4:13 to play, Mirarchi scored at the 3:12 mark and Reynolds netted his first of two goals with 2:40 to play. Santa Clara reduced UCLA's cushion to 3-2, as Jimmy Moore (2:15) and Tucker Carlson (1:19) scored in the period's closing minutes. The Bruins led, 4-2, after one quarter, receiving a goal from Fahlsing with 51 seconds left in the first quarter.

Each team traded two goals in the second quarter. Leading 5-4, UCLA pushed its cushion to 6-4 with 13 seconds remaining in the half on a goal from Barabino.

In the second half, UCLA never led by fewer than three goals. The Bruins outscored the host Broncos by a 3-1 margin in the third quarter to secure a 9-5 cushion. Santa Clara tallied four goals to UCLA's three in the final period.

UCLA goalkeeper Andrew Mesesan started in the cage for the Bruins, totaling three saves in the first, second and fourth quarters. Mesesan allowed eight goals. James Hartshorne made two stops in the third quarter, limiting Santa Clara to one goal.

Santa Clara goalkeeper Michael Wishart netted 12 saves.

UCLA returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader against Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Bruins will play both games at Pomona-Pitzer, facing Whittier at 1 p.m. and Pomona-Pitzer at 3:30 p.m.
