Senior attacker Tanya Gandy (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo HS) of the UCLA women's water polo team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for May 4-10.
Gandy earned NCAA Tournament most valuable player honors for the second year in a row after leading the Bruins to their fifth consecutive NCAA championship. The Bruins defeated cross-town rival USC, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at the University of Maryland to capture their 11th national championship (seventh NCAA title) in program history. Gandy scored a game-high three goals to lead UCLA past USC. In three NCAA Tournament games, Gandy registered a tournament-high nine goals. She scored two in UCLA's first-round victory over Michigan before adding four in a 12-11 victory over Stanford on Saturday. With her three-goal effort Sunday, Gandy pushed her season total to 79 goals, the highest single-season goal total in UCLA's record books (eclipsing Coralie Simmons' 74-goal total from 1998).
This is Gandy's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and second of her career.
