2016 NFL Draft
Franklin In Florida For Doak Walker Award

Dec. 6, 2012

Senior running back Johnathan Franklin was in Florida on Thursday night for the presentation of the Doak Walker Award which honors the nation's top running back. It was one of several awards handed out at the Home Depot College Football Awards show.

Franklin has become the school record-holder for career rushing yardage (4,369 - old mark 3,731 by Gaston Green 1984-87), career all-purpose yardage (4,887 - old mark 4,688 by Maurice Jones-Drew 2003-05), most 100-yard rushing games in a season (9 - old mark 8 held by multiple players), most rushing yards in a single-season (1,700 - old mark 1,571 by Karim Abdul-Jabbar 1995) and most all-purpose yards in a single-season (2,024 - old mark 1,878 by Terraence Austin in 2008) during the 2012 campaign. He was up against Montee Ball of Wisconsin and Kenjon Barner of Oregon for the Walker Award.

In addition, Franklin was named on Thursday to the second-team Walter Camp All-America and FOXSportsNEXT College Football All-America teams. Fellow Bruins Xavier Su'a-Filo (OL) and Anthony Barr (LB) were also named to the FOX second team.

Barr, who is playing his first season on the defensive side of the ball after two as a running back, recorded 1.5 sacks in the Championship game and moved into the national lead with 13.5 sacks. That total is second on the all-time school list for a season behind Dave Ball's total of 16.5, set in 2003.

Su'a-Filo, who returned to the team following a two-year Church mission, has been opening holes for Franklin and protecting quarterback Brett Hundley well all season.

The Bruins will be back in action on Dec. 27 against Baylor in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl in San Diego, CA. For further information on UCLA and the Holiday Bowl, please visit our Bowl Central page at http://www.uclabruins.com/bowlcentral.
