Freshman Tatum Souza stands in third-place after day one of the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational Heptathlon after scoring 3048 points. Teammate Kimmie Conner stands in sixth with a four-event total score of 2765 pts.
Souza started off the day with a lifetime-best run in the high hurdles, placing second in a time of 14.29 (938 pts.). Conner was fifth overall, running 14.83 for 864 pts. Both women tied for eighth in the high jump with equal clearances of 5-00.25 to earn 655 pts. That mark was a season-best for Souza. Souza was second in the shot put with a mark of 39-1 (655 pts.), while Conner was sixth with a lifetime-best toss of 33-4.50 (541 pts.). In the final event of the day, the 200m, Souza placed fourth in a time of 25.97 (800 pts.) and Conner was eighth (27.08/705 pts.).
Competition in the heptathlon concludes on Friday with the long jump, javelin and 800m. The open section of the meet will also be contested on Friday, while the invite portion will run Saturday.
