Los Angeles, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UCLA Baseball team saw its midweek winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night, as fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton defeated the Bruins, 9-6, at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Left-hander Tyler Peitzmeier earned the win for the Titans after throwing two innings of scoreless relief. Freshman right-hander Cody Poteet took the loss for the Bruins, allowing four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Michael Lorenzen picked up his ninth save of the year for the Titans as well.

Cal State Fullerton struck first in the top of the first, scoring two runs off of Poteet to take an early 2-0 lead. Richy Pedroza walked to lead off the inning before J.D. Davis doubled him home. Lorenzen, who started the game in center before moving to pitcher in the ninth, singled on the next-at bat to give the Titans a two run advantage.

UCLA got one back in the bottom of the second, when freshman Trent Chatterton singled in junior Kevin Williams from second with two outs to cut Cal State Fullerton's lead in half. The Bruins then jumped ahead in the third, when junior Pat Valaika hit a two-run shot to left to give UCLA a one-run lead.

The lead would not last long though, as the Titans scored two in the top of the fourth thanks to a wild pitch with a runner on third and an RBI groundout by Jared Deacon. After Fullerton added a run in the fifth to make it 5-3, the Titans broke the game open in the sixth behind a four-run frame. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore Max Schuh entered the game to pitch to Fullerton first baseman Carlos Lopez. Schuh battled to get to a 3-2 count, but Lopez eventually singled to left to bring in two more runs. Later in the inning, Lorenzen doubled to right-center with the bases loaded again, scoring another two runs and giving the Titans a 9-3 lead.

UCLA would not quit, getting a run in its half of the sixth on an RBI groundout from Chatterton to cut the deficit to five. The Bruins added runs in the seventh and eighth innings as well, both coming on errors by the Fullerton defense. That would be all that the Bruins would get though and they went on to fall to the Titans by the score of 9-6.

Sophomore Eric Filia posted his seventh multi-hit game of the year, matching a season-high with three hits, including two doubles. Chatterton also recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Finally, Valaika went 1-5 on the night, knocking in two runs with his third home run of the season.

The Bruins (18-7, 6-3 Pac-12) return to Pac-12 play this weekend as they host No. 6 Oregon State (23-4, 5-1 Pac-12) in a three-game series at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game times are 6 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Game Notes: The loss snapped UCLA's streak of 14 consecutive midweek victories...the loss also snapped UCLA's 12-game winning streak over teams from the Big West Conference...junior Brian Carroll reached base for the 23rd consecutive game with his single in the seventh inning...Trent Chatterton improved his batting average to a team-leading .375 with his 2-4 night...UCLA's six runs were the most runs scored in a losing effort since the Bruins scored 11 runs in a loss to Purdue on May 6, 2012...with his four strikeouts on the night, freshman James Kaprielian has now struck out 16 of the 33 batters he's faced this season...both teams combined to use 11 pitchers in the ballgame.
