Ojai, Calif. - UCLA women's tennis player Elizabeth Lumpkin won her quarterfinal singles match Friday to advance to Saturday's semifinals of the invitational draw at the Pac-10 Championships. In addition, the Bruin duo of Yasmin Schnack and Riza Zalameda are also in the semifinals of the main doubles draw.
Lumpkin defeated ASU's Rebecca Rankin, 6-0, 6-3, setting up a meeting with another ASU player, Laila Abdala, on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. UCLA's Alex McGoodwin, the top seed in the invitational draw, wasn't as fortunate, as she was forced to withdraw from her quarterfinal match with USC's Julie Smekodub due to injury. Smekodub had won the first set 6-4 and was leading 1-0 in the second set at the time of McGoodwin's retirement.
Schnack and Zalameda began the day with an 8-3 victory over ASU's Sabrina Capannolo/Jessica Leitch. They followed that up with a 9-7 win over Stanford's Celia Durkin/Jessica Nguyen. Awaiting the duo in the semifinals is USC's Judy DeVera/Amanda Fink. That match will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore won their first-round match before falling to Stanford's Lindsday Burdette/Anne Yelsey, 8-4. In the invitational doubles draw, Tracy Lin and Anna-Viktoria Lind fell in the second round to ASU's Laila Abdala/Rebecca Rankin.
