STANFORD, Calif. - The UCLA men's water polo team fell to California, 10-9, in the third-place game of the MPSF Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Stanford. Freshman Cristiano Mirarchi led the Bruins (19-6) with three goals, and senior Ben Hohl added two goals.
Top-seeded California (24-4) earned a third-place finish in the annual conference tournament behind five goals from junior Ivan Rackov, who contributed a key steal and goal with under three minutes remaining to give the Golden Bears a late two-goal advantage at 10-8.
California received four of its first six goals from Rackov to propel the Golden Bears ahead by a 6-2 margin before UCLA tied the contest, 6-6, early in the third quarter. California also received two goals from senior Brian Dudley and one from juniors Luka Saponjic and Charlie Steffens and freshman Giacomo Cupido.
UCLA fell behind 4-1 after one quarter and trailed by as many as four goals, at 6-2, midway through the second quarter. The Bruins answered before halftime, receiving goals from Murphy, Hohl and Samuels to trim their deficit to 6-5. A penalty shot from Kuga with 5:29 remaining in the third quarter tied the contest, 6-6.
Saponjic broke the 6-6 tie with a power-play goal in the third quarter, putting California ahead 7-6. The Bruins answered with a game-tying goal from Hennessy before the end of the third period.
Deadlocked at 7-7 through three quarters, California outscored the Bruins, 3-2, in the final frame to secure the 10-9 victory. The Golden Bears raced to a 9-7 lead early in the fourth quarter with goals from Steffens and Dudley at the 4:31 mark. Mirarchi converted a penalty shot for UCLA, putting the Bruins as close as 9-8, before California pushed its margin to 10-8. Mirarchi scored with his second penalty shot in the closing minute of the game.
Freshman goalkeeper James Hartshorne registered six saves for the Bruins. California's Justin Parsons finished with 11 stops in the cage.
UCLA concluded the 2010 season with a 19-6 record, second-place finishes in the NorCal and SoCal Tournaments and a fourth-place finish in the MPSF Tournament.
