STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team downed No. 20 Air Force, 21-4, in a first-round match of the NorCal Tournament at Delta College on Saturday morning. Senior Brett Hays, junior Bret Lathrope and sophomore Lucas Reynolds each scored three goals to lead UCLA.
The Bruins (3-0) received goals from 11 players in the non-conference win, outscoring Air Force in each quarter.
UCLA will face No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in a second-round match at 5:20 p.m. on Saturday at Delta College's June Fergusson Pool.
Against Air Force, UCLA led from the start. Hays scored the first of his three goals 24 seconds into the game. Air Force (2-3) tied the game, 1-1, on a goal from Dillon Fisher (6:35), before the Bruins closed the opening quarter with a 6-0 scoring run.
Leading 7-1 after the opening period, UCLA continued its offensive charge by outscoring the Falcons, 6-2, in the second quarter to assume a 13-3 cushion.
Reynolds scored two of his three goals in the third quarter. UCLA also received one goal in that frame from Lathrope and sophomore Aimone Barabino to secure a 17-3 lead entering the final period.
The Bruins added four more goals in the fourth quarter, receiving two from Lathrope, one from Hays and one from junior Luka Bokavsek.
Junior goalkeeper Matt Rapacz started in the cage for UCLA, totaling three saves in the first two quarters. Sophomore James Hartshorne netted one stop for the Bruins in the third quarter, and senior Andrew Mesesan made one save in the final period.
Air Force was led by two goals from Cruz Smithson, both in the second quarter. Falcons' goalkeeper Danny Harold netted four saves in the first three quarters, before Michael Fish recorded three stops in the final quarter.
