Coral Gables, Fla. - The 11th-ranked UCLA baseball team lost to fifth-ranked Miami, 9-8, Saturday night at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes rallied from an 8-6 ninth-inning deficit with three runs to record its second one-run victory over the Bruins in as many nights.

Miami (2-2) used three-consecutive singles and one double to open the bottom of the ninth inning and tie the score, 8-8. With one out, Hurricane third baseman Gus Menendez delivered the game-winning single to center field, scoring first baseman Yonder Alonso.

UCLA junior Brant Rustich (0-1) absorbed the loss, allowing three runs off five hits in 1.0 inning. Miami's David Gutierrez (1-0) picked up the win after pitching 1.0 scoreless inning.

The Bruins (2-3) trailed 6-3 in the seventh and used five runs over the final three innings to mount a furious comeback. UCLA added one run in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie the score, 6-6, before taking its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth.

Sophomore Brandon Crawford and senior Tim Stewart led off the top of the ninth with back-to-back home runs, giving UCLA an 8-6 lead. Crawford's blast on a 1-1 pitch broke a 6-6 deadlock. Two pitches after the shortstop's first home run of the season, Stewart followed with a solo shot to the same location beyond the left-field fence.

The Bruins trailed from the first inning and continued to cut down Miami's lead. The Hurricanes struck first with solo home runs from sophomores Jemile Weeks and Yonder Alonso in the bottom of the first frame. UCLA tied the contest in the next inning, using two singles, two walks and one hit by pitch.

Miami recaptured the lead, 3-2, with a run in the second inning and added two more in the third. UCLA cut the deficit to 5-3 on Carrithers' first RBI-double in the fourth inning. The Hurricanes added one run off two hits and one walk in the sixth inning.

UCLA concludes its three-game series at Miami on Sunday at 10 a.m. (PST). Freshman Gavin Brooks makes his second start of the season for UCLA and will face Miami left-hander Manny Miguelez. Sunday's game can be followed on CSTV's GameTracker at uclabruins.com.
