BERKELEY, Calif. - The fourth-seeded UCLA men's water polo team dropped a 10-9 decision to fifth-seeded UC Irvine in sudden-victory overtime late Saturday afternoon in the first round of the MPSF Tournament. Sophomore Scott Davidson recorded a team-high three goals for the Bruins, who dropped their first game in three meetings this season to UC Irvine.
UC Irvine's Brandon Johnson netted the game-winning goal with 1:10 remaining in a three-minute sudden-victory overtime period.
Both teams reached a 7-7 deadlock through four quarters of regulation, initiating two three-minute overtime sessions. UCLA (19-7) and UC Irvine (13-10) traded goals in the first overtime period, knotting the score, 8-8.
Trailing 9-8 with 30 seconds to play in the second overtime session, UC Irvine's Tim Hutten tied the contest, 9-9, to send the game into sudden-victory overtime. Earlier in the season (Sept. 22), the Bruins edged the visiting Anteaters, 12-11, in sudden-victory overtime on the campus of UCLA.
Colin Mello led the Anteaters with four goals. Davidson and senior Justin Johnson each scored one goal for UCLA in overtime.
UCLA sophomore Chay Lapin recorded seven saves in the cage. UC Irvine goalkeeper Matt Garcia made 13 stops.
The Bruins return to action in the second round of the MPSF Tournament against eighth-seeded Long Beach State (17-13) on Saturday, Nov. 24. Game time is slated for 11 a.m. at California's Spieker Aquatics Center.
