TUCSON, ARIZ - The third-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team improved to 18-0 (5-0 Pac-10) on Friday night with a 30-24, 30-23, 20-30, 30-25 win at Arizona. The Bruins were led offensively by Ali Daley and Nana Meriwether, who shared the team lead with 14 kills apiece in the match. UCLA's 5-0 start to Pac-10 play is its best since opening the 1999 conference season with a 13-0 record. The Bruins went on to finish that season as Pac-10 co-champions with a 17-1 record.
Friday night's match saw Meriwether finish with five blocks, one solo and four assists, to go along with her 14 kills while Rachell Johnson finished second on the team with four blocks on the evening. Colby Lyman recorded a match-high four service aces, adding five kills and three block assists for 10.5 points to go along with her team-high 17 digs.
In the opening game of the match, the score was tied at 14-14 before a pair of Rachell Johnson kills gave the Bruins the lead for good. UCLA never trailed or was tied in the second game, and took a 2-0 lead into the locker rooms at the break.
Game three saw the Wildcats sprint out to a 10-4 lead and the Bruins were never able to recover, falling 30-20. UCLA was able to recover in game four, taking control of the game after Arizona had used a Jacy Norton kill to tie the score at 23-23. Arizona would score just two more points in the game as an Ali Daley kill ended the match with a 30-25 Bruins win in game four.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday night with a 7 pm match at Arizona State.
