Freshman Patrick Cantlay secured a runner-up finish while senior Connor Driscoll tied for third as both golfers led the No. 2 ranked UCLA men's golf team to the Battle at the Beach title for the second consecutive year.
The Bruins recorded a final round 351 (+1) to finish the tournament at 1057 (+7). They won by six strokes over second place San Diego who finished with an overall score of 1063 (+13). This is UCLA's second team title of the season and Coach Derek Freeman's tenth tournament victory as head coach of the Bruins. This is also the Bruins' second straight Battle at the Beach win, with no other team having won the tournament since it began last year.
Individually, Cantlay fired a final round 68 (-2) to take home second place with a 205 (-5). He is also the only player in the entire field to post three rounds under par for the tournament. Patrick has now recorded back-to-back runner-up finishes after he placed second at the Amer Ani Invitational in Hawaii. Driscoll shot a one-over par 71 for his final round to finish in a tie for third at 206 (-4), which is also a career best finish for the senior. Cantlay finished two strokes and Driscoll finished three behind winner Kenneth McCready of San Diego, who posted an overall score of 203 (-7) to take home medalist honors.
Sophomore Pontus Widegren finished in a tie for 17th after putting up an overall score of 215 (+5) while sophomore Mario Clemens tied for 23rd with a score of 216 (+6). Junior Gregor Main posted a score of 222 (+12) to end up tied for 50th while junior Alex Shi Yup Kim shot a final round 69 (-1) to finish tied for 66th at +17.
Two Bruins competed as individuals in the tournament as well. Freshman Anton Arboleda tied for 14th place after posting a tournament score of 214 (+4) while sophomore Bobby Lange finished in 79th place with a total of 239 (+29).
The Bruins will be back out on the course from Monday, February 28th, to Tuesday, March 1st at the USC Invitational in Westlake Village, CA.
