TEMPE, Ariz. - A fifth inning two-run home run from junior left fielder Krista Colburn gave the Bruins a 4-3 victory at Arizona State on Friday night. UCLA improves to 36-15 (12-8 Pac-10) with the win, while ASU falls to 48-15 (12-8 Pac-10). The Bruins and Sun Devils are now in a three-way tie with Washington for second place in the Pac-10 standings behind Arizona.
UCLA opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Krista Colburn led off the day with a single to left. She was sacrificed to second by Jaisa Creps. A two-out ground ball hit by Jodie Legaspi yielded a Sun Devil fielding error, givin the Bruins runners on the corners with two outs for Megan Langenfeld. Langenfeld connected on a two-run double to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead.
ASU answered in the bottom half of the frame, leaving the slate even after one complete inning. In the home half of the third, Kaitlin Cochran led off the inning with her 17th home run of the season, a shot over the right field fence that gave the Sun Devils a 3-2 lead.
That score held to the top of the fifth inning. Tara Henry led off the frame for the Bruins with a slap-hit single over the shortstop's head, and scored on the sixth home run of the year from Krista Colburn, a shot over the scoreboard in left field to give UCLA a 4-3 lead.
Langenfeld had another solid performance in the circle for her 13th victory on the year. She truck out six in the complete-game victory.
The Bruins and Sun Devils wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 1 pm game at Farrington Stadium. The game will be televised live by FSN Prime Ticket and FSN Arizona.
