LOS ANGELES - Senior Meghan Schoen and juniors Jade Machado and Kaitlin Sather have been named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District Team as announced on Thursday. Machado earned first-team honors, making her eligible for Academic All-America accolades later this year. Sather and Schoen were each named to the third team.
Machado, a communication studies major with a 3.93 cumulative grade point average, leads the Bruins with 3.87 digs per game this season. She has posted double figures in digs 19 times and ranks seventh in the Pacific-10 Conference in digs per game.
Sather, a history major with a 3.59 cumulative GPA, has 11 double-doubles this season and will move past the 1,000-career kill mark this week. She has 17 contests with at least 10 kills and is tied for second on the team with 3.46 kills per game.
Schoen, a communication studies major with a 3.84 cumulative GPA, has appeared in 18 matches this season, making 10 starts. She is one of three Bruins averaging over a block a game at 1.09, recording a season-best seven against Kansas State on Sept. 2.
Machado's mention on the All-District First Team marks the third time a Bruin has earned such an honor, joining Julie Bremner (1993) and Lauren Fendrick (2002). The three awards give UCLA women's volleyball nine honors since 1992.
