SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Right-hander Charles Brewer (2-1) recorded career-highs with nine strikeouts in nine innings of relief to earn the win, allowing one run and four hits as the No. 11 UCLA baseball team downed Cal Poly, 10-6, Friday evening at Baggett Stadium. Trailing by a 5-0 margin after the first inning, UCLA (9-5) responded with seven runs in the top of the second and held on for the non-conference victory.

Brewer relieved right-hander Dan Klein with no outs in the bottom of the first inning and went the distance for the Bruins.

Cal Poly left-hander Derrick Saito (1-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs and two hits in 1.2 innings. Saito walked six hitters - five in UCLA's seven-run second inning - and recorded two strikeouts.

Shortstop Brandon Crawford led the Bruins at the plate, hitting 3-for-3 with two RBI, two walks and one run. Crawford reached base via a hit or walk in all five plate appearances Friday evening. Right fielder Gabe Cohen tallied a team-high three RBI, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with one run against Cal Poly (7-8).

Second baseman Alden Carrithers hit 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and one hit by pitch, extending his hit streak to six games. The senior from Portland, Ore., has hit safely in 11 of the Bruins' 14 ballgames this season.

In UCLA's seven-run second inning, the first three Bruin hitters reached via a base on balls. Designated hitter Cody Decker scored on a wild pitch, and center fielder Blair Dunlap's sacrifice fly to left brought home Crawford. Carrithers singled to left field, sending home catcher Ryan Babineau. A base-hit through the right side by Cohen scored third baseman Jermaine Curtis and Carrithers. The Bruins added two more runs that inning on a single to left by Decker.

UCLA added its eighth run in the top of the third, staking an 8-5 lead. Left fielder Brady Dolan led off the inning with a walk and later scored on an RBI-double to left field by Carrithers.

The Mustangs added one run in the bottom of the fourth. Third baseman Brent Morel hit a one-out triple to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by first baseman Wes Dorrell.

The Bruins added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to lead 10-6. A single through the left side of the infield by Cohen sent home Dunlap, who led off the frame with a walk. Later in the inning, Crawford drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Carrithers.

UCLA concludes its three-game series at Cal Poly on Saturday, March 15. Game time is 1 p.m at Baggett Stadium.

Game Notes: Alden Carrithers continued his hot streak at the plate, hitting 2-for-5; Carrithers has hit 8-for-16 (.500) with four runs, four RBI, one double, one triple and one home run through UCLA's last three games...neither starting pitcher lasted past the second inning...all nine Bruins in the batting lineup scored at least one run - seven players each recorded at least one hit.
