LOS ANGELES -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team defeated No. 3 Stanford, 9-5, on Friday night at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 23-2 overall and 5-0 in MPSF play while the Cardinal dropped to 14-5 overall and 2-3 in league action.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Rapacz had nine saves while senior Josh Samuels, junior Chris Wendt and sophomore Paul Reynolds each scored two goals to lead the Bruins. Nick Hoversten led Stanford with two goals.
The Bruins got on the board first when junior Lucas Reynolds scored from two meters at the 5:52 mark of the first period. But Stanford answered immediately with a goal at 5:37 by BJ Churnside. The Cardinal took the lead on a power play goal by Bret Bonanni with 4:31 left. But the Bruins had a quick answer to tie it at 2-2 on a power play goal by Samuels with 4:06 to go that ended the first period scoring.
The second period was all about 6-on-5 opportunities, as the Bruins built a 4-2 lead on back-to-back power play goals by Paul Reynolds (2:27) and Wendt (1:27). The Cardinal ended the first half scoring with an extra man goal by Alex Bowen with 26 seconds left. The Bruins took a 4-3 lead into the break.
UCLA came out firing in the third, and extended its lead to 6-3 after full strength goals from sophomore Daniel Lenhart (6:47) and Samuels (5:21). But Stanford pulled to within one goal after back-to-back goals by Hoversten (3:56 and 1:09). UCLA pushed it back to a two-goal lead at the end of the third with a goal by Paul Reynolds (:56) left to make it 7-5.
The Bruins dominated the fourth period, pitching a shutout, 2-0 in the fourth. Both of UCLA's goals in the final stanza were of the rebound variety. Wendt took a shot off the crossbar by Lenhart and fired it back in to make it 8-5 with 7:11 remaining. The final goal was scored by senior Griffin White the same way, off an errant shot by Paul Reynolds that hit the crossbar and landed in the lap of White. He poked it in (2:46), beating the keeper for a 9-5 final margin of victory.
The Bruins converted on 5-of-7 power plays while the Cardinal went 3-for-8.
Rapacz played the entire game, picking up nine saves. Scott Platshon was credited with four saves for Stanford (none in the second half). The Bruins won the final two sprints (both by Lenhart). Churnside won the first two for Stanford.
The Bruins head to No. 7 Pacific for a Noon MPSF clash with the Tigers on Sunday, Nov. 11.
