Bruins in Major League Soccer - Week Five

Each week, uclabruins.com will update and highlight select UCLA players' progress during the current MLS season. Games highlighted are from Apr. 2-8. The Bruins lead all universities with 23 alumni in MLS.

Chad Barrett (Los Angeles Galaxy; Years played at UCLA: 2003-04)
Barrett came on as a substitute and played 34 minutes in the Galaxy's 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night. Barrett came on in the 56th minute for Edson Buddle and recorded one shot in his 34 minutes of play.

Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake; Years played at UCLA: 2006-07)
Beltran started in both of Real Salt Lake's games this week and played all 90 minutes in each of them as Real Salt Lake defeated the Montreal Impact 1-0 on Wednesday before shutting out the Colorado Rapids 2-0 on Saturday. On Wednesday against the Impact, Beltran helped Real Salt Lake's defense allow just two shots on goal and earn their second shutout of the MLS season. On Saturday, Beltran and the rest of the RSL defense picked up right where they left off as they allowed the Rapids to just have one shot on target in the match. Beltran also had a great night on offense, as he assisted on both of Real Salt Lake's goals. On their first goal, Beltran played a great ball over the top of the Colorado defense into the box where teammate Alvaro Saborio controlled the pass and scored the goal. Beltran was the second assister on Real Salt Lake's second goal. He has started every match for Real Salt Lake this season and has helped to the team to a first place standing in the Western Conference.

Beltran's 2012 MLS season stats: 6GP/6GS, 528 minutes, 2 assists, 3 shots, 2 SOG

David Estrada (Seattle Sounders FC; Years played at UCLA: 2006-09)
Estrada started and played 66 minutes at forward in Seattle's 0-0 draw with DC United. He was subbed for Eddie Johnson in the 66th minute and recorded one shot in his 66 minutes of play. Estrada is fourth in the league in goals with four on the season and he has started all four of the Sounders' matches so far.
Sounders record: 2-1-1, 7 points, 5th place in Western Conference

Kevin Hartman (FC Dallas; Years played at UCLA: 1995-96)
Hartman made five saves and earned his first shutout of the season in FC Dallas' 1-0 win over the New England Revolution on Thursday night. Hartman faced 13 total shots on the night and made numerous key saves, including a great diving stop on a shot to the far corner by fellow UCLA alum Kelyn Rowe, to give Dallas their second win of the year. Hartman also made a nice save in the 82nd minute to keep the game scoreless. He is currently third in all of MLS with 19 saves on the year.
FC Dallas record: 2-2-1, 7 points, 6th place in Western Conference

Hartman's 2012 MLS season stats: 5GP/5GS, 450 minutes, 19 saves, 8 GA, 1.60 GAA

Jordan Harvey (Vancouver Whitecaps FC; Years played at UCLA: 2002-05)
Jordan Harvey earned his second consecutive start and recorded his first assist of the season in Vancouver's 3-1 loss to San Jose over the weekend. Harvey got the play started on the Whitecaps' first goal as he threw the ball in from the sideline into the box. From there a Vancouver player gave a one-touch pass to striker Sebastian Le Toux who scored the goal for the Whitecaps. This was the second consecutive game that Harvey has played all 90 minutes for Vancouver.
Whitecaps record: 2-1-2, 8 points, 4th place in Western Conference

Harvey's 2012 MLS season stats: 5GP/2GS, 258 minutes, 1 assist, 1 shot

Kamani Hill (Colorado Rapids; Years played at UCLA: 2004-05)
Kamani Hill came on as a substitute and played 14 minutes in Colorado's 2-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Hill replaced Jaime Castrillon in the 76th minute and recorded one shot in his 14 minutes of play.
Rapids record: 3-2, 9 points, 3rd place in Western Conference

Hill's 2012 MLS season stats: 2GP/0GS, 22 minutes, 1 goal, 3 shots, 2 SOG

Patrick Ianni (Seattle Sounders FC; Years played at UCLA: 2003-05)
Patrick Ianni once again started and played all 90 minutes at center back for Seattle in their 0-0 draw with DC United. It was the second time Seattle has shutout their opponent this season, and Ianni has played a key role on defense in both of those matches. Ianni again was stellar in defense on Saturday, allowed DC United to have just four shots on goal and eight shots total. He has started and played every single minute in all four of Seattle's matches this season as well.
Sounders record: 2-1-1, 7 points, 5th place in Western Conference

Ianni's 2012 MLS season stats: 4GP/4GS, 360 minutes

Chance Myers (Sporting Kansas City; Years played at UCLA: 2006-07)
Myers started at right back and put together another outstanding 90 minutes of play as Sporting Kansas City remained undefeated with a 1-0 home over the LA Galaxy. The former No. 1 overall draft pick almost put Kansas City up when he controlled the ball at the top of the box and blasted a shot on net. But LA goalkeeper Josh Saunders made a brilliant save to keep Myers from earning his first goal of the year. Myers has played every minute for Kansas City so far this season and has helped lead them to their best start in their 17-year history.
Sporting Kansas City record: 5-0, 15 points, 1st place in Eastern Conference

Myers's 2012 MLS season stats: 5GP/5GS, 450 minutes, 1 assist, 4 shots, 1 SOG

Kyle Nakazawa (Los Angeles Galaxy; Years played at UCLA: 2006-09)
Nakazawa saw his first action of the year for the Galaxy, coming on as a substitute and playing 18 minutes in their 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City. Nakazawa came on for Juninho in the 72nd minute and did not record any offensive statistics in his 18 minutes of play.
Galaxy record: 1-3, 3 points, 9th place in Western Conference

Matt Reis (New England Revolution; Years played at UCLA: 1994-97)
Matt Reis recorded three saves and gave up one goal in New England's 1-0 loss at FC Dallas on Thursday night. Reis did all he could to keep Dallas out of the net, starting with a nice kick save off the line on a shot by Brek Shea in the 34th minute. Reis would prevent Shea from scoring again in the 87th minute, making an incredible one-handed diving save as he pushed Shea's curling shot over the bar to keep the game tied at 0-0. Dallas eventually scored in the 95th minute, but Reis again put together another solid performance in goal for the Revolution.
Revolution record: 2-3, 6 points, 5th place in Eastern Conference

Reis's 2012 MLS season stats: 5GP/5GS, 450 minutes, 13 saves, 6 GA, 1.20 GAA

Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake; Years played at UCLA: 1997-99)
Rimando was not tested much in Real Salt Lake's two games this week, making a combined three saves in the two matches and earning back-to-back shutouts over Montreal and Colorado. Rimando made two saves against the Impact on Wednesday before recording one more against Colorado on Saturday. He is currently tied for fourth in MLS with 18 saves on the year and has just a 0.67 GAA thus far.
Real Salt Lake record: 5-1, 15 points, 1st place in Western Conference
This week's Real Salt Lake schedule: Apr. 14 - at Sporting Kansas City
Rimando's 2012 MLS season stats: 6GP/6GS, 540 minutes, 18 saves, 4 GA, 0.67 GAA

Kelyn Rowe (New England Revolution; Years played at UCLA: 2010-11)
Rowe continued to make his presence felt in his rookie season in MLS, playing all 90 minutes once again and recording three shots on goal in New England's 1-0 loss to FC Dallas on Thursday night. Rowe almost scored in the 8th minute when he put a low, lining shot towards the far post. But FC Dallas keeper and fellow UCLA alum Kevin Hartman made a great diving save to prevent the goal. Rowe has started all five the Revolution's games so far and has one goal on the year.
Revolution record: 2-3, 6 points, 5th place in Eastern Conference

Rowe's 2012 MLS season stats: 5GP/5GS, 405 minutes, 1 goal, 8 shots, 8 SOG

Michael Stephens (Los Angeles Galaxy; Years played at UCLA: 2006-09)
Stephens started at central midfielder for the injured David Beckham and played 77 minutes in the Galaxy's 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. Stephens was subbed off in the 77th minute for Marcelo Sarvas and did not record an offensive statistic in the match.
Galaxy record: 1-3, 3 points, 9th place in Western Conference

Stephens' 2012 MLS season stats: 3GP/1GS, 142 minutes

Marvell Wynne (Colorado Rapids; Years played at UCLA: 2004-05)
Wynne once again started and played the entire match at center back in Colorado's 2-0 loss to Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Wynne did not record a statistic in his 90 minutes of play. So far, he has started and played in every single minute off all five of Colorado's matches this year and has helped lead the team to two shutouts in their first five games.
