Sophomore forward Travis Wear (Huntington Beach, CA/Mater Dei HS) of the UCLA men's basketball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Jan. 2-8.
Wear led the Bruins to a home sweep of Arizona and Arizona State last week. He scored a career-high 20 points in the 65-58 win over Arizona on Jan. 5 to become the fourth Bruin this season to reach the 20-point mark in a game. He also added five rebounds and tied his career-high in blocks with three. Wear then scored 16 points and added seven rebounds with one block in the 75-58 blowout win over Arizona State on Jan. 7. With the block against the Sun Devils, Wear extended his consecutive games streak with at least one block to 12 contests. He was also 12-of-12 from the free-throw line on the week (6-for-6 in each game) to push his consecutive made free throws streak to 15. On the week, Wear averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks while being extremely effective in shooting, make 75.0 percent of his shots (12-for-16) from the field and 100 percent of his free throws. He had nine offensive rebounds in the two games and parlayed those into a team-high 18 second chance points. He has 42 offensive rebounds on the year, compared to 24 on the defensive glass and has had at least one offensive rebound in 13 of his 14 games played.
This is Wear's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
