LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sophomore Scott Davidson scored three goals for the second time in as many days, leading the No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team past No. 8 Long Beach State, 9-7, Sunday afternoon. Freshman Jacob Murphy added two goals for the visiting Bruins, who enter the upcoming MPSF Tournament as the fourth-seeded team.
In a game featuring contrasting halves, the Bruins (19-6, 5-3 MPSF) outscored Long Beach State, 4-2, in each of the first two quarters. The host 49ers (17-12, 2-6 MPSF) gained a 2-1 lead with 4:12 to play in the first quarter after Reid Tomassi tallied his first of two goals.
UCLA took over at that point, scoring seven consecutive goals to assume an 8-2 advantage midway through the second quarter. Senior Justin Johnson tied the contest, 2-2, with a goal at 1:46 in the opening quarter to initiate the Bruins' scoring streak. Davidson closed the run by tallying back-to-back goals at 4:31 and 3:31 in the second quarter, handing UCLA an 8-2 cushion. The Bruins led 8-4 at halftime.
The 49ers limited UCLA to just one goal in the second half, outscoring the Bruins, 3-1, in the final two quarters.
Long Beach State's Clint Wilson led the 49ers with three goals.
Bruin sophomore goalkeeper Chay Lapin totaled six saves in the cage. Long Beach State's Steve MacKenzie recorded seven stops.
With three goals against Long Beach State on Sunday, Davidson has now scored in each of UCLA's last 11 games, totaling 23 goals in that span (2.1 goals per game).
The Bruins return to action in the first round of the MPSF Tournament against fifth-seeded UC Irvine on Friday, Nov. 23. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at California's Spieker Aquatics Complex. Complete tournament seedings and pairings will be announced by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) later Sunday afternoon.
