Nov. 16, 2010

LOS ANGELES - UCLA women's tennis coach Stella Sampras Webster announced the addition of two highly-ranked recruits on Tuesday, as Robin Anderson (Matawan, N.J.) and Kaitlin Ray (Little Rock, Ark.) have signed national letters-of-intent to join the team in the fall of 2011. Anderson is listed as the nation's No. 1 overall recruit, while Ray checks in at No. 19. Both players are listed as Blue Chip recruits according to the website TennisRecruiting.net.

"These two players are going to have a great impact on our program," said Sampras Webster, who is entering her 15th season as head coach at UCLA. Robin and Kaitlin have excellent reputations both on and off the court and they epitomize the type of players that we want here at UCLA. I really think that future recruits will want to play here because of them. Obviously getting the top recruit in the country in Robin is a big deal for us. But Kaitlin was also ranked very highly in the juniors. This class as a whole is just fantastic."

Anderson, who is a senior at Matawan Regional High School, was a quarterfinalist in both singles and doubles at this year's U.S. Open Junior Championships in Flushing, N.Y. After qualifying for the singles draw, she went on to upset eighth-seeded Laura Robson of Great Britain, 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16. Another highlight for Anderson includes capturing the singles title at the USTA National Open in Latham, N.Y. (2009). She has also reached the singles final at both the ITF Easter Bowl Championships (2010) and the USTA National Spring Championships (2010), and was a quarterfinalist at the Dunlop Orange Bowl (2009). Her current USTA Ranking in the Girls' 18s Division is No. 5. She has been ranked as high as No. 56 in the ITF World Junior Rankings.

Ray is from Little Rock, Ark. but attends the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head Island, S.C. She has been a singles finalist at two events this year, including the USTA National Open (Norcross, Ga.) and the Bullfrog Southern Designated (Raleigh, N.C.). She also reached the semifinals in singles at the ATP Gator Bowl in Ponte Vedra, Fla., and the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles at an ITF event in Naples, Fla. Ray advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles (w/Krista Hardebeck) at the USTA Girls' 18s National Championships in San Diego, Calif.
