March 26, 2009

LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team defeated Brown, 15-9, in the Bruins' second game of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at UCLA. Earlier in the day, UCLA cruised past No. 12 Hartwick, 15-6. Senior Tanya Gandy and freshman Sarah Orozco led the Bruins with three goals each against Brown.

The Bruins (20-3) netted two goals from senior Anne Belden and freshman Randi Bresee and one goal each from senior Katie Rulon, sophomores Katie Estrada, Priscilla Orozco and Noel Umphrey and freshman Nicole Barker. Brown (12-11) received three goals each from Sarah Glick, Lauren Presant and Katherine Stanton.

UCLA scored the game's first seven goals - including six in the first quarter - to open a 7-0 lead. Sarah Orozco netted each of UCLA's first three goals, scoring at the 6:46, 6:26 and 3:55 marks in the opening frame. Gandy's goal at 3:17 pushed the Bruins' cushion to four goals before UCLA received one goal from Belden at 1:20 and another from Bresee with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter.

After securing a 7-0 lead on a goal by Barker with 7:08 left in the second quarter, Brown responded with a 5-1 scoring run, slicing UCLA's margin to 8-5. Glick scored her first of three goals at the 5:33 mark in the second period, before UCLA's Katie Estrada netted the Bruins' eighth goal. Trailing 8-1, the visiting Bears scored twice before halftime and added two more goals early in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to 8-5.

UCLA added three consecutive goals - from Gandy (3:35, 2:39) and Belden (3:16) - to claim an 11-5 lead. Both teams traded goals in the final minute of the third quarter, giving UCLA a 12-6 cushion entering the final period. UCLA and Brown each registered three goals in the fourth quarter.

Brown goalkeeper Stephanie Laing led the Bears' defense with 11 saves. UCLA freshman Caitlin Dement recorded one stop in the cage.

The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team returns to action at No. 1 Stanford on Friday, April 3. Game time of the MPSF match at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center is slated for 6 p.m.
