Sept. 26, 2008

The second-ranked UCLA women's golf team was in second place after the opening round at the Mason Rudolph Championship, hosted by Vanderbilt at The Legends Club in Franklin, TN.

The Bruins posted a team score of 287 (-1) and trailed Oklahoma State by one shot following the first day of competition. USC was third at 288 (E), followed Arizona State at 289 (+1). In fifth place was host Vanderbilt at 291 (+3). Duke and Florida were tied for sixth at 292 (+4).

Individually, junior Sydnee Michaels opened with a 68 (-4) and was alone in third place. One-over par through 12 holes, Michaels birdied five of her final six holes to take low score honors for the Bruins. She trailed Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and Auburn's Candace Schepperle by a stroke.

Freshman Stephanie Kono was tied for eighth place after posting a 71 (-1). Four-under par through 11 holes, she bogeyed four of her next five holes to return to even par. She made birdie at the 17th and a par at the 18th.

Sophomores Maria Jose Uribe and Glory Yang carded matching scores of 74 (+2). Both players made just one birdie in the first round and each was tied for 30th.

Senior Tiffany Joh, nursing a tender hamstring, signed for a 75 (+3) after making three inward bogeys. She was tied for 40th.

Second round competition continues on Saturday.
