Stanford, Calif. - In a match featuring two of the country's top programs, the No. 4 UCLA women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to top-ranked Stanford on Saturday at the Taube Tennis Stadium.
After both teams split the first two doubles matches to finish, the doubles point was decided at court No. 3, where Stanford's Veronica Li and Carolyn McVeigh downed UCLA's Pamela Montez and Carling Seguso, 8-5 to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Stanford used its momentum from doubles to jump out to an early lead on the Bruins in singles, winning the first set on five of six courts. The lone bright spot early for UCLA came at court No. 6, where Maya Johansson was able to post a 6-4 first-set win over Li.
The Cardinal, however, never really let the Bruins into Saturday's match, immediately notching three straight-set singles victories to clinch the win.
Two bright spots on the day for UCLA came at court Nos. 5 and 6, where Johansson and Montez were both winners. Johansson downed Li, 6-4, 6-4 at court No. 6, while Montez was a 6-7, 6-2, (12-10) winner over 47th-ranked Stacey Tan. Montez, who at one point was trailing 9-5 in the final tiebreaker, fought off several match points to pull out the victory.
UCLA returns home to the Los Angeles Tennis Center next week, hosting UC Irvine on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
