Seventh-ranked UCLA returns to Pauley Pavilion for its final regular season home series of 2008, hosting No. 14 UC Santa Barbara on Wed., Apr. 2, and No. 2 Cal State Northridge on Fri., Apr. 4. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
Darren Preston will call the play-by-play for both matches and he can be heard at www.uclabruins.com.
UCSB (8-14, 6-12) enters Wednesday's match following a pair of road losses to No. 3 BYU. In those matches, freshman outside hitter Jeff Menzel led the Gauchos with 19 and eight kills, respectively.
On Feb. 20, Menzel led UCSB with 21 (.321) kills in a 3-1 home victory against UCLA.
Menzel leads the Gauchos with 385 total kills this season and an average of 4.7 kpg.
In UCSB, UCLA will renew one of the oldest rivalries in college volleyball. The Bruins and Gauchos have played 140 times with UCLA winning 111, more victories against UCSB than any other opponent.
Cal State Northridge (20-4, 15-3) entered the week with a 14-match winning streak prior to Tuesday's match at UC Irvine. The Matadors are enjoying their best season under Coach Jeff Campbell, who lettered one season (1985) at UCLA before transferring to CSUN, where he played three more seasons. In his 11th year, Campbell began the week with a career record of 163-147.
This week the Matadors rank third nationally in hitting percentage at .326. Junior Eric Vance ranks second nationally in aces at .542 per game and ninth in hitting at 4.59 kills per game.
In a 3-1 home victory against the Bruins on Feb. 22, Vance and senior Isaac Kneubuhl pounded 18 kills each and freshman Cody Loe added 15 as the Matadors hit .336.
UCLA leads this series 54-8 and has won nine of the last 11.
In the league race, the Bruins trail fourth place Pepperdine (11-8) by full game in the victory column. Should the Bruins and Waves tie for fourth place, UCLA would win the tiebreaker and host a quarterfinal MPSF playoff match on Apr. 19.
BRUIN NOTES--Friday's match will be Senior Night for UCLA's All-American Libero Tony Ker. Ker is the Bruins' career and single match digs leader.
