The reigning NCAA champion Arizona Wildcats proved to be too much for UCLA as they handed the Bruins their first dual meet loss of the season. Arizona, ranked No. 4 in the U.S., defeated the 15th-ranked Bruins 157-121. The Wildcats improved to 2-1 (1-1 Pac-10), while the Bruins fell to 4-1 (2-1 Pac-10). Arizona is now 11-17 all-time against UCLA.
UCLA had four event winners during the meet - senior Marisa Samaniego on one-meter (260.42), senior Anna Poteete in the 100 freestyle (50.65), sophomore Lauren Hall in the 500 freestyle (4:55.08) and sophomore Brittany Beauchan in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.96). In all, the Bruins tallied 20 season-best marks during the meet.
In an exhibition of platform diving, sophomore Morgan Erpenbeck led all competitors with her score of 248.33. Senior Tess Schofield was second with a total of 240.01, while sophomore Laura Winn was fifth with a score of 182.99.
Saturday's meet marked the end of dual meet competition for both the swimmers and divers until January, but both teams will continue to compete in invitationals in the coming months. The divers will head to College Station, TX next weekend for the Texas A&M Invitational. Both teams will join together in December for the Texas Invitational to wrap up the 2008 portion of their schedule.
