Junior driver Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon HS) of the UCLA women's water polo team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Apr. 30-May 13.
Mathewson scored the game-winning goals in the NCAA semifinals against USC and the championship game against Stanford, leading the Bruins to their third consecutive NCAA women's water polo title and the 100th NCAA title for UCLA. In the 7-6 win over USC in the semifinals, she scored two fourth quarter goals, putting the Bruins ahead, 6-5, and then scoring the game-winner with 1:04 to play. In the 5-4 victory over Stanford in the championship game, she scored the game's first goal, added a goal in the third quarter to give UCLA a 4-1 lead and then scored the eventual game-winner, putting UCLA up, 5-3. Mathewson, who also scored the game-winning goal against USC in the NCAA title game a year ago, finished the NCAA Tournament with seven goals and was named to the All-Tournament team.
This is Mathewson's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
