UCLA Baseball Drops 6-1 Decision to No. 10 Stanford

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball team lost the second game of a three-game series to No. 10 Stanford, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Stanford right-hander Erik Davis (6-1) hurled his fourth consecutive complete game, limiting the Bruins (18-16, 3-5 Pac-10) to one run and seven hits in nine innings while recording a career-high 13 strikeouts.

Stanford (21-11-2, 8-3 Pac-10) used a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-out, three-run homer from designated hitter Randy Molina, who went 2-for-5 with one run and three RBI.

Bruin right-hander Charles Brewer (4-4) cruised through the first four innings before allowing six runs, all with two outs, in the top of the fifth. Brewer lasted 4.2 innings, surrendering six runs and six hits while walking four and striking out two. Left-hander Brendan Lafferty limited the visiting Cardinal to five hits in 4.1 scoreless innings of relief. Lafferty, who leads UCLA's staff with 18 appearances, recorded four strikeouts and allowed one walk.

Stanford catcher Jason Castro went 3-for-5 on the afternoon, totaling two RBI and one run. Third baseman Zach Jones was 2-for-3 with one run.

UCLA was led at the plate by second baseman Alden Carrithers, who went 2-for-3. Catcher Brent Dean was 1-for-3 and scored the Bruins' lone run of the afternoon.

Stanford's six-run fifth inning began after Jones reached first base with a one-out single to left. Second baseman Cord Phelps drew a walk, and a ground-rule double to right field sent home Jones. Left fielder Joey August reached first base with a walk, before Castro delivered a two-RBI single to right field, handing the Cardinal a 3-0 lead. Molina's ensuing three-run shot to right doubled Stanford's lead, 6-0.

The Bruins scored in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Dean advanced home on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

UCLA and Stanford conclude their three-game series Sunday, April 20, at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. Left-hander Gavin Brooks (3-2) takes the hill for UCLA, as Stanford will send right-hander Jeffrey Inman (3-2) to the mound.

Game Notes: Alden Carrithers registered his team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the season...Stanford's Erik Davis struck out each of the final six Bruins...in two games against Stanford, the Bruins' bullpen has allowed one unearned run in 8.1 innings...prior to the start of Saturday's game, UCLA chancellor Gene Block threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
