LOS ANGELES - The No. 6 UCLA men's tennis team picked up its second shutout in as many matches on Tuesday, overpowering UC Santa Barbara, 7-0 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins up their record to 2-0 on the season while the Gauchos, who also lost 7-0 to Pepperdine last week, fall to 0-2.
Tuesday's match was fairly routine for the Bruins, who after winning the doubles point cruised to straight-set wins on five of six singles courts. Freshman Daniel Kosakowski continued to impress at the No. 1 singles spot for the Bruins, losing just three games en route to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alex Konigsfeldt.
Maxime Tabatruong (court No. 3), Clay Thompson (court No. 4), Adrien Puget (court No. 5) and Holden Seguso (court No. 6) were also straight-set winners on Tuesday. Seguso, who had won the first set 6-0 over Philip Therp, found himself in a huge hole in the second set, going down 5-1. He eventually battled back to take the set 7-5, giving the Bruins an insurmountable 4-0 lead in the dual match.
The only match that was extended on the day came at court No. 2, where Amit Inbar needed a match tiebreaker to overcome Benjamin Recknagel, 7-5, 4-6, (10-4).
UCLA is one of the host sites for the 2011 ITA Kick-Off Weekend, this Friday thru Sunday at college campuses throughout the country. Men's action begins at the Los Angeles Tennis Center this Friday, with Fresno State and Florida State squaring off at 10:00 a.m. That match will be followed by UCLA taking on Minnesota at 1:00 p.m. Friday's winners will meet in the second round on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
