LOS ANGELES - The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team overcame two first-half deficits to defeat No. 3 Hawai'i, 11-8, Thursday afternoon at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The Bruins outscored the visiting Rainbow Wahine by a 5-0 margin in the third quarter to assume control of the MPSF match.
Sophomore Priscilla Orozco led UCLA (8-2, 2-0 MPSF) with three goals, her third hat trick of the season. The Bruins also received two goals from senior Anne Belden and freshman KK Clark. Junior Dagmar Genee and sophomore Carmen Eggens each tallied a game-high three goals for Hawai'i (6-4, 0-3 MPSF).
After leading 1-0 on an early goal by Orozco, the Bruins allowed three goals to trail, 3-1. Through the second period, both teams continued trading goals. UCLA tied the contest, 3-3, fell behind by one goal and evened the game again, 4-4, with 3:37 to play in the first half.
One minute later, UCLA led by a 5-4 margin before Hawai'i tied the contest with 2:08 remaining. Genee's goal with 70 seconds left in the first half propelled Hawai'i into halftime with a 6-5 advantage.
UCLA jumped to a 10-6 lead midway through the third quarter. Senior Tanya Gandy's goal at the 6:40 mark tied the game, 6-6. The Bruins received two goals from Belden (5:22, 4:25) and one from Clark (4:57) to pull ahead, 9-6. Orozco's third goal of the afternoon handed the Bruins' a 10-6 cushion.
Hawai'i outscored the host Bruins, 2-1, in the final frame.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen netted 11 saves in the cage for UCLA. Hawai'i goalkeeper Serena Bredin finished the contest with nine stops.
The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team returns to action in the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 21. The Bruins face No. 14 Long Beach State on Saturday at UC Irvine at 11:30 a.m.
