Head women's track and field coach Jeanette Bolden has announced the signing of nine student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent. The class includes one of the top prep athletes in Canada, several standout sprinters from California, field event athletes and a distance runner. Joining the Bruins in the fall are Brea Buchanan, Elena Clarke, Gabrielle Estell, Kayla Mallett, Jennifer Owen, Kylie Price, Katherine Reid, Celeste Rietveld and Katherine Salcido.
Gabrielle Estell (Rancho Verde HS) is the No. 1 returning 200m runner in the state. Last season she had a top 200m time of 23.86 in 2010 (#19 in the U.S.), which was a Riverside County record. She also has a top 400m time of 54.72 and was a member of the state champion 4x100m relay last season. Estell also finished ninth in the 200m at the State Meet last season.
Katherine Salcido (San Dimas HS) will join the Bruins to compete in the heptathlon next season. She has a top 100m hurdle time of 14.29 (No. 11 in CA), as well as top marks of 5-4 in the high jump and 18-11 in the long jump.
Jennifer Owen (West Ranch HS) is a local distance runner who placed fourth in the 1600m at the 2010 state meet. She has top times of 2:12.40 in the 800m, 4:52.45 in the 1600m, 4:59.58 in the mile and 11:22.22 in the 3200m.
Kayla Mallett (West Torrance HS) is a triple jumper that placed ninth in the state meet last season. She has a top mark of 39-6 in the triple.
Kylie Price (Bishop Amat HS) is a state finalist in both the 100m (6th) and long jump (2nd). She is the No. 4 returning runner in the 100m (11.68) and 200m (24.80) and No. 3 returner in the long jump (19-3.50/19-10.75 win-aided). Price is the younger sister of one of UCLA's starting cornerbacks, Sheldon Price.
Elena Clarke (San Luis Obispo HS) is a pole vaulter that is coached by Jan Johnson. She won the CIF-Div. III crown last season with a school record clearance of 12-0.
Brea Buchanan (Ayala HS) is one of the top sprinters in California. Last season at the state meet, she finished third with a top 100m time of 11.84. Buchanan was also third at the state meet in the 100m hurdles (13.60). During the 2010 indoor season, she had a top 60m hurdles mark of 8.45, which was fifth in the U.S.
Katherine Reid (Earl Marriott/British Columbia) is one of the most decorated sprinters in Canada. She is a two-time British Columbia high school champion in the 400m and was ranked No. 1 in the country and 10th in the world last season. She set a Canadian age-group record of 53.47 in the 400m and was fifth at the World Youth Olympics.
Celeste Rietveld (Livermore HS/Livermore, CA) is a jumper/hurdler. She has top marks of 5-9 in the high jump, 14-4.75 in the long jump, 33-11.25 in the triple and 16.15 in the 100m hurdles.
