Los Angeles, CA - Third-ranked UCLA earned its sixth consecutive victory with an 18-4 rout over ninth-ranked UC Irvine on Thursday afternoon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. A trio of Bruins - Katie Rulon, Tanya Gandy and Priscilla Orozco - each netted hat tricks to lead the offensive surge. UCLA improves its record to 16-3, while UC Irvine falls to 11-5.
UCLA scored early, with Orozco putting the Bruins ahead at 7:27 and Gandy notching her first goal of the day at 6:42. The Anteaters got on the board at 5:27 with a goal by Ashling Taylor, only to see the Bruins run off four straight goals to close the quarter - two by Rulon and one each by Anne Belden and KK Clark.
Both teams' defense tightened up in the second quarter, with UCLA outscoring the Anteaters, 2-1. A goal by Irvine's Kat Plummer made it 6-2 Bruins, and a pair of goals by Gandy gave UCLA an 8-2 halftime lead.
The Bruins continued to roll in the third quarter, running off five straight goals to start the half. Rulon picked up her third of the game at 7:33, then Orozco scored back-to-back goals at 6:39 and 5:38. A goal by Clark made the score 12-2 UCLA, and Kelsey McGinley scored back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of the quarter. Erin Kiene got one goal back for the Anteaters with 12 seconds remaining.
Up by 11 goals, the Bruins pulled their starters by the fourth quarter and did not miss a beat, outscoring Irvine 4-1. After an uneventful day for starter Brittany Fullen, who only had to make three saves, freshman goalkeeper Kristen Simonds got between the pipes and recorded two saves. Freshman Randi Bresee and sophomore Katie Estrada each knocked in a goal, and sophomore Monica Powers scored two consecutive goals for the first multiple goal game of her career.
