No. 4 Men's Tennis Blitzes No. 18 Cal, 7-0

Feb. 2, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Playing its first ranked opponent of the 2007 season on Friday, the No. 4 UCLA men's tennis team narrowly won the doubles point and then cruised in singles play, eventually taking a 7-0 decision over 18th-ranked Cal at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA, which has yet to surrender a point in four matches this season, improves to 4-0 on the year. Cal, which entered Friday's match undefeated, falls to 3-1 overall.

UCLA came very close to being down 0-1 heading into singles play, as Cal came out as the fresher team in doubles action. Although Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel registered an 8-2 win at court No. 1, Cal was in control on both remaining courts. Shortly after posting an 8-5 victory at court No. 2, it looked as if the Bears were going to take the point, as Pierre Mouillon and Ken Nakahara were serving for the match up 7-6 against UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine and Jeremy Drean at court No. 3. After fighting off two match points in that game, the Bruin juniors eventually found their form, storming back to take a 9-7 win to secure the point for UCLA.

UCLA's thrilling doubles comeback set the tone for singles play, as the Bruins completely took control of the match from there. Dehaine gave UCLA a 2-0 lead when he downed Eoin Heavey, 6-2, 6-0 at court No. 4. Right next to Dehaine at court No. 5, Gruendler easily dispatched of Cal freshman Kallim Stewart, 6-1, 6-1.

Those two wins paved the way for Kohlloeffel to clinch it, as he put UCLA ahead 4-0 following a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mouillon at court No. 1. With the match easily in hand, UCLA's Michael Look and Haythem Abid went on to straight-set wins at court Nos. 6 and 2 respectively. Senior Chris Surapol was last to finish, downing Nakahara, 6-3, 4-6, (10-6) at court No. 3.

UCLA returns to the Los Angeles Tennis Center tomorrow, hosting No. 19 Stanford at 1:00 p.m.
