Storm Opens Season With Hammer Throw Title

UCLA Track & Field opened their outdoor season with solid performances Friday at the 35th Sheraton Mission Valley Aztec Invitational in San Diego.

The women began the day in winning fashion, where All-American Ida Storm threw 65.66/215-06 to win the women's hammer throw. Senior Jaycee Olsen finished ninth, throwing 47.02m/154-03.

Later in the day, the Bruins took the track for the Distance Carnival. In the 3,000m steeplechase, three Bruins finished in the top eight, with freshman Molly Mann leading the way with a time of 11:22.91. Fellow freshman Nicole Evans crossed the finish line 12 seconds later (11:34.18) and Kristina Rivera rounded out the Bruin squad in eighth (11:59.50). Caitlin Schmitt followed her teammates with a 13th place finish in the women's 5,000m invite (18:42.51)

Junior Sarah Toberty finished second (4:29.16) in the women's 1,500m invite, leading a Bruin field that of 15 runners. Bruins claimed six of the top ten spots in this event Friday.

Track & Field also had a big day on the recruiting front. On Friday, the Bruins received a National Letter-of-Intent from Alimatu-Sadia Ibrahim, middle distance runner from Santa Rosa, CA. A Santa Rosa High School product, Ibrahim currently holds personal bests of 26.21 in the 200m dash and 57.48 in the 400m. She will join the Bruins in the fall.
