TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State pitcher Mackenzie Popescue held the ninth-ranked Bruins to just four hits, as #1 Arizona State defeated UCLA 2-0 on Saturday at Farrington Stadium. Freshman Jessica Hall and junior Aleah Macon combined to strike out seven in six innings of work.
The Bruins fall to 29-8 overall and 5-3 in Pac-10 play, while the Sun Devils improve to 38-5 and 5-3 in league action.
Hall (14-6) started for UCLA and struck out three in 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, three hits and three walks. Macon tossed 2 2/3 frames of scoreless relief, fanning four and giving up two hits. Offensively, the Bruins could only muster singles from senior GiOnna DiSalvatore, juniors Katie Schroeder and Dani Yudin and freshman Alyssa Tiumalu.
Hall struck out the side in the first inning and set down the Sun Devils in order in the second. In the third, Arizona State's Alix Johnson drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a double to left by Katelyn Boyd. One out later, Kaylyn Castillo walked to load the bases and Krista Donnenwirth followed with a single to center to plate Johnson and Boyd to make it 2-0.
Macon retired the final six batters she faced, striking out two in the sixth.
The Bruins had only two baserunners get into scoring position in the first five innings before producing their best chance in the sixth. With one out, Schroeder was hit by a pitch and moved to third when DiSalvatore reached on a fielding error by second baseman Sam Parlich. But Popescue induced freshman Kellie Fox into an inning-ending double play to keep UCLA off the board.
