Two Bruins to Compete in U.S. Amateur

Aug. 19, 2007

UCLA's Erik Flores and Philip Francis will compete in the 107th U.S. Amateur Championship, Aug. 20-26 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The U.S. Amateur format features 36 holes of stroke play on Aug. 20-21 with the top 64 players earning a berth in the single-elimination match play draw.

Flores, 20, earned Second-Team All-America honors in 2006 when he led the Bruins with a 72.1 scoring average. He also earned Freshman of the Year honors from the Pac-10.

Francis, 18, is considered by many experts to be the top junior player in the incoming class of 2007. He has won dozens of amateur events in his junior career, and this summer played in three PGA events on sponsor's exemptions.

Both players will be competing in their first U.S. Amateur Championship.
