Nirra Fields, an incoming UCLA basketball recruit, has been selected California's Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year by ESPN HS Cal-Hi Sports. Fields is a 5-9 guard from Santa Ana, CA Mater Dei HS.
Fields averaged 23 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in her senior high school season. She helped lead Mater Dei to its third straight CIF State Championship this past year. Fields scored 24 points (7-14 fg, 10-10 ft), grabbed 11 rebounds and recorded six assists in the Division I State title game win over Berkeley HS.
Fields, who is ranked as the nation's No. 11 player and No. 3 guard according to ESPN HS Girls Basketball, was named California's Gatorade Player of the Year last month. She scored 20 points for the West team in the McDonald's All-Star game.
UCLA has had several previous winners of the Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year Award -- including current Bruin senior Jasmine Dixon (Long Beach Poly HS) in 2008.
