WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA junior left-hander Tim Murphy has captured Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors after having thrown 11 shutout innings in two UCLA victories last week. The Vista, Calif., resident became the first Bruin to hurl a complete game shutout since Feb. 25, 2005, when he went the distance in a 2-0 win against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, March 1.
On the week, Murphy threw 11.0 scoreless innings, scattering seven hits and totaling 13 strikeouts.
Murphy totaled a season-high 10 strikeouts without issuing a walk in UCLA's shutout of Bethune-Cookman. He struck out the first six batters he faced, finishing the game with two strikeouts in the final inning before a national television audience (ESPN2) at the MLB Urban Youth Academy.
In UCLA's 5-4, 13-inning victory against UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, Feb. 27, Murphy pitched two hitless, scoreless innings of relief. He recorded three strikeouts in the 11th and 12th innings of a five-hour, 35-minute marathon contest.
The Pitcher of the Week honor marks the first in Murphy's career and is the 45th selection all-time for UCLA.
