POMONA, Calif. - The No. 1 UCLA men's water polo team blanked Whitier, 20-0, and earned a 14-4 victory at Pomona-Pitzer at the Sagehens' Haldeman Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
Aimone Barabino, Alex Johnson and Bret Lathrope each scored three goals in UCLA's 20-0 win against Whittier, the Bruins' first shutout since Sept. 7, 1997, when UCLA defeated Air Force, 22-0. Aimone Barabino and Alex Johnson each added three goals in the shutout win over Whittier.
Against Whittier on Saturday afternoon, UCLA led 6-0 after the first quarter and by a 10-0 margin at halftime. The Bruins added seven goals in the third quarter and three in the final frame.
Hours later, UCLA secured a 14-4 non-conference win over Pomona-Pitzer. Josh Samuels led UCLA with three goals in the match, as Brett Hays, Luka Bokavsek and Chris Wendt each added two goals. In all, nine Bruins scored against Pomona-Pitzer.
The Bruins led 2-0 after the first quarter and 5-1 at halftime. UCLA used a 6-2 scoring run in the third quarter and outscored the host Sagehens by a 3-1 margin in the final period.
UCLA returns to action against Pacific at home on Friday, Nov. 4. Game time of the MPSF match at Spieker Aquatics Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
