Charlottesville, Va. - In a battle of undefeated teams at the ITA National Team Indoors, fifth-seeded Tennessee got the best of fourth-seeded UCLA on Saturday, with the Volunteers posting a 4-2 victory over the Bruins in a quarterfinal match at the Boars Head Sports Club. The loss for UCLA (3-1) sets up an interesting consolation match on Sunday, with UCLA taking on USC at 9:00 a.m. (EST). It will be the first of three meetings between the two teams this year. The top-seeded Trojans were upset by Texas in their quarterfinal match earlier in the day.
"It was close and we had our chances," said UCLA head coach Billy Martin. We're just not there yet to be quite honest. The lack of practice and lack of matches was really evident this weekend. Even the travel heading into Virginia was a nightmare. I'd say in the 27 years that I have been to this tournament this is the worst preparation that we have had. I actually thought were lucky to win last night. But there are no excuses. Tennesssee is a great team and deserves to move on to the semifinals."
The Bruins' two points on the day came at the bottom-half of the lineup, as Matt Brooklyn (court No. 4) and Amit Inbar (court No. 5) each posted straight-set singles wins. The other bright spot for UCLA came at court No. 1, where Haythem Abid was holding his own against the nation's No. 2-ranked player, John-Patrick Smith. The two players were tied 1-1 in the third set when play was suspended.
"If our players have any pride in being a Bruin, they will step it up against the Trojans tomorrow," added Martin. "It's a consolation match, but it's also a rivalry and a match we definitely want to win."
