IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team earned a spot in Sunday's semifinals with two wins on the first day of the UC Irvine Invitational at UCI's Anteater Pool. The Bruins (15-2) defeated No. 17 UC Davis, 14-4, in the morning before posting a 6-5 win over No. 6 Loyola Marymount.

Saturday's two victories propelled UCLA toward a semifinal matchup against crosstown rival and No. 2-ranked USC on Sunday at 11:45 a.m.

Senior Kelly Easterday scored a season-high three goals in the Bruins' victory of UC Davis. Sophomores Emily Greenwood and Brooke Martin each tallied two goals in that game. In all, UCLA had goals from 10 players in the first-round match against UC Davis.

UCLA outscored the Aggies, 3-1, in the first period and by a 2-1 margin in the second quarter to earn a 5-2 halftime cushion. The Bruins added four more goals in the third quarter before outscoring UC Davis, 5-1, in the final period.

Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement netted four saves and allowed two goals in the first half, while freshman goalkeeper Sami Hill netted eight saves and allowed two goals in the second half.

Against Loyola Marymount in the late afternoon, the Bruins received two goals each from senior Priscilla Orozco and junior Sarah Orozco. Senior Grace Reynolds and sophomore Brooke Martin also scored one goal.

UCLA fell behind, 2-0, after the first quarter and did not score any goals in the first half. Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Bruins got on the board in the third quarter. Each team tallied three goals in that period, as UCLA entered the final quarter trailing LMU, 5-3. The Bruins outscored the Lions, 3-0, in the fourth quarter to earn a 6-5 victory.

Hill netted nine saves in goal for UCLA against Loyola Marymount.

The Bruins will play USC at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. The winner of that match will play either Stanford or Hawai'i in the championship contest at 5:15 p.m. The tournament's third-place game will begin at 4 p.m.
