UCLA Baseball Registers 6-4 Victory at No. 12 UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - The UCLA baseball team broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning and held on for a 6-4 victory over No. 12 UC Irvine at Anteater Ballpark on Tuesday evening. The Bruins (26-23) added one run in each of the final three innings, and left-hander Brendan Lafferty (2-2) limited the Anteaters (33-14) to one run in 3.1 innings of relief.

Catcher Brent Dean led the visiting Bruins, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Second baseman Alden Carrithers went 2-for-4 with two singles, and left fielder Mickey Weisser belted a solo home run in a 1-for-3 effort.

Bruin left-hander Tim Murphy notched his first save of the season, recording the final two outs of the game after UC Irvine had loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning. UC Irvine right-hander Crosby Slaught (1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief, allowing one run and one hit while walking four batters in 1.1 innings.

The Anteaters were led at the plate by first baseman Josh Tavelli, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs and one RBI. Left fielder Tony Asaro and third baseman Eric Deragisch each scored one run for UC Irvine.

UCLA took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Right fielder Gabe Cohen and Dean led off the frame with base hits. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis followed with a run-scoring single to left field, sending home Cohen. With one out, Carrithers knocked a base-hit to left, advancing home Dean.

UC Irvine sliced the Bruins' lead in half, scoring one unearned run in the bottom of the third. Right fielder Dillon Bell drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Deragisch.

The Bruins and Anteaters each belted solo home runs in the fourth inning. Weisser belted his second round-tripper of the season, handing the Bruins a 3-1 advantage. UC Irvine reduced the Bruins' lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning, as Tavelli crushed a solo homer off the left-field scoreboard.

UC Irvine tied the contest, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth. Asaro led off the inning with a triple off the wall in right-center field and scored on a groundout to shortstop by designated hitter Jeff Cusick.

The Bruins claimed a 4-3 advantage with one run in the top of the seventh. Curtis reached on a walk and advanced to third base on a throwing error, a failed pickoff attempt by Slaught. Center fielder Brady Dolan lifted a sacrifice fly ball to right field, allowing Curtis to score the Bruins' fourth run.

UCLA added one run in the eighth and another in the ninth to claim a 6-3 cushion. Desiganted hitter Cody Decker led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on an error. Dean's sacrifice fly sent home Decker. In the ninth inning, Dolan scored on a fielder's choice groundout after leading off the frame with a double.

The Bruins returns to action Friday, May 16, when they open a three-game Pac-10 series against Washington State. Game time Friday is slated for 6 p.m. at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. This weekend's series marks the final three games at UCLA this season.

Game Notes: Alden Carrithers registered his team-leading 20th multi-hit game of the season...UCLA left-hander Matt Grace allowed one unearned run and one hit in three innings, making his second start of the season; Grace logged one strikeout and issued four walks...UC Irvine left-hander Tom Calahan surrendered two runs and four hits in 2.1 innings as the Anteaters' starter.
