NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Junior Katie Rulon scored a team-high three goals as the No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 16 Cal State Northridge, 10-5, Saturday afternoon at Matador Pool. The Bruins (12-0, 2-0 MPSF) led Cal State Northridge (3-4, 0-1 MPSF) the entire game, but the host Matadors kept the match close until the final quarter.
Senior Jillian Kraus added two goals, and five other Bruins each contributed one goal.
UCLA raced to a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter, as Kraus and senior Courtney Mathewson each scored in the game's first four minutes. The Bruins maintained their two-goal lead, owning a 4-2 advantage after the first quarter.
The Bruins were held scoreless in the second quarter. Cal State Northridge cut UCLA's lead to 4-3 by halftime. UCLA outscored the Matadors by a 3-1 margin in each of the final two quarters.
Saturday's victory marked the 11th game this season in which Rulon has added two or more goals. The attacker from Point Loma, Calif., has scored a team-leading 29 goals in 12 matches.
Cal State Northridge's Dayna Van Gorder led the Matadors with two goals.
Junior Brittany Fullen made one save in the cage for UCLA. Cal State Northridge's Jillian Stapf totaled eight stops in goal.
UCLA completes its three-game weekend road trip at No. 14 Long Beach State on Sunday, Feb. 17. Game time at Campus Pool is slated for 12 p.m.
