Two UCLA golfers survived a pair of match play competitions to advance to the quarterfinals at the 111th U.S. Women's Amateur Thursday at the Rhode Island Country Club.
And two other Bruins saw their hopes dashed with losses in the Round of 16.
Senior Stephanie Kono eliminated teammate Tiffany Lua 3 & 2 and incoming freshman Erynne Lee beat Annie Park in 19 holes in Thursday's afternoon matches. Junior Lee Lopez lost 3 & 2 to Austin Ernst, also in the Round of 16.
After falling in the U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks quarterfinals to eventual champion and teammate Brianna Do, Kono found a rhythm and never trailed against Lua. The three-time first-team All-American won holes 2-4 and built a 4-up lead through eight holes before clinching the match with a par on the 16th hole.
Lee won a dogfight that alternated leads throughout the match. Down a hole at the 15th, she squared the match with a birdie and took a 1-up lead with a par on the 16th. Park quickly responded by winning the 17th with a birdie and the match went to extra holes after both players made par at the 18th. At the 19th, Lee made a par to clinch the match.
Lopez found herself down four after eight holes. She managed to cut the lead in half by the 12th, but Ernst birdied the 13th and the two players halved the next three holes before Lopez ran out of opportunities.
In the morning matches, Kono advanced with a 3 & 2 victory over Lydia Ko; Lee moved on with a 4 & 2 win over Tiffany Lim; Lua beat Mackenzie Brooke Henderson 3 & 2 and Lopez won 2 & 1 against Stephanie Kim.
In Friday's quarterfinals, Kono meets Ernst of Seneca, SC at 1:05 p.m. EDT and Lee plays Brooke Pancake of Chattanooga, TN at 12:45 p.m. The semifinals will be played on Saturday and the 36-hole final on Sunday.
